Description
Between Pointe-Noire and the Acomat canyon, in the north of Basse-Terre, this family river hike and canyoning trip introduces younger adventurers to the joys of Guadeloupe’s rivers. A gentle, playful green-level route, open from age 8, for 2h30 with a state-certified guide — on the Côte-sous-le-Vent, between Pointe-Noire and Deshaies.
Family canyoning at the Saut d’Acomat
The Saut d’Acomat is one of the best-known waterfalls on the Côte-sous-le-Vent, the Caribbean coast of Basse-Terre. The river leading to it has no technical difficulty: it is above all an aquatic canyon, ideal for a first taste of canyoning with children. You swim in freshwater pools, slide down natural chutes and try small jumps, always by choice: the guide suggests, nobody is forced.
The official French grading of the route (v1 a3 II) sums up the spirit of the trip: very little verticality, a strongly aquatic character. The highest abseil is no more than 12 metres, a reassuring height to discover rope descent.
How the trip unfolds
- Welcome and gear: the guide hands everyone a full wetsuit, helmet and harness, then gives a safety briefing adapted to children.
- Approach walk: about thirty minutes on a well-marked trail through the rainforest to the river.
- River descent: swimming, slides, small jumps and a first abseil, all the way to the Saut d’Acomat.
- Return: a trail leads back to the cars in about a quarter of an hour.
Allow 2h30 of activity, and about 3 hours in total including welcome and gear.
Who is it for?
This is the gentlest trip in our programme, designed for families: open from age 8, accompanied by an adult, with no previous experience. Being able to swim is not required; the wetsuit helps a lot with buoyancy. If your children are 10 or older and already love the water, Bourceau canyoning in Bouillante or the Deshaies discovery trip are the next step. All levels are explained on the canyoning levels page.
Access and meeting point in Pointe-Noire
The meeting point is the Maison du Cacao car park in Pointe-Noire, on the Côte-sous-le-Vent. The exact address and a map are sent when you book. Please arrive a little early to get changed without rushing.
When to go canyoning at Acomat?
The trip runs all year round. The river level rises quickly after heavy rain: in case of flooding or storms, the guide may cancel or postpone the trip, and you are then refunded or moved to another slot. The Saut d’Acomat is also a very popular swimming spot for walkers.
What to bring?
Swimsuit, towel, change of clothes, water and a snack. For your feet, simple trainers that can get wet are enough. All technical equipment is provided. See the full list on the participant information page, prices on the canyoning rates page and open dates on our upcoming availabilities.
