Sport or discovery canyoning: how to choose?
Our trips are graded in four levels. Green and Blue are discovery trips, open without experience from age 8 or 10. Red and Black are the sport trips: longer, more vertical, with successive abseils, higher jumps and a more demanding approach walk. If it is your very first time, start with a Blue trip; if you have done some canyoning before, or you are sporty and at ease in water, the Red level is for you. Details on the canyoning levels page.
Rivière Noire or Bois Malaisé?
We run two sport trips, both in the National Park on the slopes of La Soufrière:
| Rivière Noire – Vauchelet | Bois Malaisé | |
|---|---|---|
| Area | Saint-Claude | Bouillante |
| Level | Red | Black |
| Duration | 5 h (half day) | 7 h (full day) |
| Minimum age | 16 | 16 |
| Price | from €70 | from €110 |
| For whom | Sporty people, a first sport experience is possible | Experienced canyoners in excellent physical condition |
In short: the Rivière Noire is the best way into sport canyoning, with its jumps and launch slide; Bois Malaisé is a real day of commitment, with a longer approach and a series of powerful waterfalls.
Requirements
- Feel at ease in the water, including out of your depth (you do not need to be able to swim).
- Good physical condition: an approach walk through the forest, progression in the river and repeated effort over several hours.
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Tell us about any health issue, treatment or injury when you book.
Getting ready
Get a good night’s sleep, eat properly before leaving and bring water and a snack. Wear closed shoes that stay on your feet and can get wet, a swimsuit, and bring dry clothes for afterwards; the rest of the equipment (wetsuit, helmet, harness) is provided. Our detailed advice: how to prepare for a sport canyoning trip.
Safety first
The rivers of La Soufrière react quickly to rain. Your state-certified guide watches the weather and the water level: he may adapt the route, skip a jump or postpone the trip if conditions are not right. He also checks every pool before a jump, as their depth changes after each flood.
Ready to go? Book the sport canyoning trip on the Rivière Noire in Saint-Claude, or the full day at Bois Malaisé if you already have experience.
